Armentieres

Definition: The word "Armentieres" is a French term for a village or fortified town in medieval Europe, often located at the foot of Mount St. Bernard, known as "the mountain of Saint Bernard." It's one of four major towns on the Loire River (the other three being Tours and Poitiers). The town was fortified by King Jean de Blois with the assistance of the French king Charles Martel, who in turn had it defended by Charlemagne himself. The name Armentieres comes from its original name "Armentières," which is a Latinized form of the Norman word "Arsenius," meaning "mountain."
