Definition: Emson (1630-1704), a Scottish lawyer, was born in Edinburgh on March 18th, 1630. He entered the bar, but was appointed to the Supreme Court of Scotland in 1704. He was also called by his full name James Emerson. In 1699 he married Elizabeth Drummond, with whom he had six children. Emson served as Lord Advocate in Edinburgh from 1703-1708 and is known for his advocacy against the Stamp Act (1765). He was an advocate of the right of people to freedom of speech and religion. Emson was a member of the Scottish National Party (SNP). He died on January 27th, 1704, in Edinburgh, Scotland.
