Definition: Amphibole - a type of organism consisting of two body parts, typically one with a hard, bony outer shell and another with a flexible, soft internal tube (or sac), like a kidney, liver, or heart. The two parts are attached by a process called an amniotic membrane, which is essentially a thin, waxy membrane that covers the inner surface of the body and provides protection from external forces. Amphiboles are found in aquatic environments where they can live as planktonic organisms or as primary producers (green plants).
