Acidities

Definition: Acidity is a measure of an acid’s ability to react with hydroxide ions (OH-). Acids produce gases when they are dissolved in water, and so the acidity is usually expressed as pH (which stands for β€œpH” – for "Protons"). When a neutral substance has some value of pH, it is called a β€˜neutral’ or an β€˜acid’, like vinegar or lemon. For example, water has a pOH of 7, meaning that it is extremely basic and will not be able to form any hydrogen ions (since you can't change its pH). In general, acids produce gas when they are dissolved in water, which can react with hydroxide ions (OH-). This reaction produces water vapor. However, if the acid contains a strong base like calcium or magnesium or is too strong, it will also produce more gas and it may also be able to form hydrogen peroxide. Note that an 'acid' does not mean that you have any kind of chemical change, but rather that this substance has been dissolved in water.
