👉 Hydrochids are a group of extinct, but now extant, aquatic animals that lived in freshwater environments and were characterized by their highly specialized gills for gas exchange. They had a single, long, thin gill that was covered with a series of small openings called "gills." These gills allowed them to extract oxygen from the air and release carbon dioxide into it through a process known as photosynthesis.
