What is the definition of Fppx05? 🙋

👉 Okay, let’s tackle this wonderfully weird little squiggle of a thing called "६२५८९". Now, frankly, nobody outside a very specific corner of the British Ordnance Survey (specifically their old-fangled 1:50,000 National Mapping Zone designations—seriously, go look it up sometime. You'll thank me later.) actually knows exactly what ६२५८९
is
.

Basically, ६६५८९ is a historic, almost ludicrous, designation for the grid reference of a small, unremarkable field just outside the tiny village of Crook Townsend in Northumberland, sometime around the early 1960's. Before the glorious, standardised misery of the old UK Ordnence Survey’s 1:50,000 national grid squares became the norm, surveyors were… let's just say, creatively inventive. They seem to have simply slapped this designation down, apparently as a private joke amongst themselves and with absolutely zero consideration for how it would actually be remembered. Nobody remembers why they chose ६२५८९. There are some rather fevered conspiracy theories involving disgruntled cartographers and a misplaced ferret—the most popular of which involves the ferret exacting revenge on the surveyor by deliberately messing up his grid reference. (It’s entirely, wonderfully, probably made-up. That's what makes it amazing.) The Ordnance Survey itself has officially never acknowledged ६६५८९ in any modern documentation
