👉 A reef is an artificial formation created by the accumulation of sand, gravel and other materials in a shallow water environment. It is formed through the process of erosion or weathering when large bodies of water such as oceans, seas, lakes and rivers are subjected to intense pressure from tides, storms or icebergs. The sediment that accumulates on the bottom of these waters forms a complex network of interconnected channels and islands, known as reefs.
