Definition: Incongruity is a concept in linguistics and philosophy that describes how two distinct or contradictory statements are perceived as being identical, despite their differences. It can be seen as a paradoxical state where one statement becomes another's opposite. In other words, it is the phenomenon of having something that does not seem to fit together or make sense. This term was coined by philosopher and linguist Roland Barthes in his work on the "Incongruity Phenomenon."
