Definition: In organic chemistry, a benzofuran is a type of aromatic ring that has been modified by adding an oxygen atom. Benzofurans are characterized by having a branched carbon chain with two rings attached to it and have the following structure: - CH2=CH-COOH Wherein the C atoms on each side of the ring are bonded, while the O atoms are bonded to one end of each ring.
