Adenomyxosarcoma

Definition: Adenomyxosarcoma is a rare form of sarcomas that develop in the reproductive tissue (endometrium). It typically starts in the endometrial lining, which grows in the uterus. The cells then grow rapidly to form tumors. Adenomyxosarcoma can be one or multiple tumors. It usually occurs in women over 50 and is diagnosed after age 30. Adenomyxosarcoma has a very specific genetic cause that affects the endometrial tissue in particular, leading to rapid growth of cancerous cells in the lining of the uterus. Adenomyxosarcoma typically starts as a small tumor but may grow rapidly until it causes serious health problems. It's most common in women over 50 and is diagnosed after age 30. The typical symptoms include persistent pain or discomfort, bleeding during sex or sexual intercourse, vaginal discharge (bloody white fluid) that smells like urine or vomit, slow or heavy menstrual periods, pelvic pain, and infertility if the tumor ruptures. The tumors may also cause other symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, hair loss, and more. There is currently no cure for adenomyxosarcoma, so it's important to seek medical attention early in the disease process. Adenomyxosarcoma should be treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or other targeted therapies.
