Definition: Guyana is a province in the Caribbean, located along the south bank of the River Andros in the western part of South America, bordering Venezuela to the north and Brazil to the east. The term Guyana was coined by Samuel Johnson as a pseudonym used for John Henry George, an English physician who lived from 1804-1859. The name was suggested because he had traveled to the West Indies on his own ship in the late 17th century and named his port in that area after Guyana, meaning "The place of the girl". His original purpose was to discover a route for trade with the British East India Company. Today, Guyana is considered one of the Caribbean's most prosperous nations. It has been recognized as a major center for health care, education, and tourism and is home to many notable industries including sugar production, mining, agriculture, and banking.
