Definition: The word "Guatemala" is a Spanish adjective form derived from the term "Guatemalan," which itself comes from the Spanish word "Gumanito." The term "Guatemalan" was used by Christopher Columbus to describe the country, but later it came to be used for the entire region. Guatemala's name means "Golden Mountain." The term "Guatemala" is now used to refer to an entire area of the United States and its neighbors that includes parts of Mexico. This area is known as the Central American Free Trade Area (CAF) because it was established in 1986 following the end of the Cold War. The word "Guatemala" can also be used to describe a person who has been born or has grown up in Guatemala, but does not have permanent residency. This term often refers to people from the country who were born in other countries and later returned to Guatemala, as well as people who are temporarily or permanently resident outside of their own country. The word "Guatemala" can also be used to describe a political entity that was formed by merging several existing entities into one, such as the United States. For example, the Guatemalan Military Commission (COMOG) was created in 1964 when Guatemala joined the United Nations and became a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The term "Guatemala" is also used to describe a political system that was established by merging several existing systems into one, such as the Common Market for Eastern Central America (COMETA) or the Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Venezuela). For example, in 2014, the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAF) was signed between Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The word "Guatemala" is also used to describe a type of currency that was introduced by Guatemala to compete with other currencies in Latin America. This term often refers to the Guatemalan Birr or Guatemalan peso.
