Acrasida

Definition: Acrasida, or acrassoids, are a family of fossilized plants that lived during the Cambrian period (about 543 to 520 million years ago). The term "acrassoid" comes from the Greek roots for "carpet," meaning "cloth" and "grains." The first known acracid plant was discovered in France in 1889, about 70 million years ago. These plants were classified as a phylum called "Carpegiales" and were later named after their common ancestor, the acrassoid. Acracids were small, round, and had long, thin petioles (roots). They possessed a large number of microspores on them that could be released into the air to form a pod. The seeds they produced were also spherical and contained many tiny grains, which they used to store energy. Acrassoids played an important role in the Cambrian dispersal of plants, spreading them across continents to spread their seeds further westward, allowing for new plant species and ecological niches to develop.
