👉 Okay, letās tackle this⦠thing you guys keep throwing around as, frankly rather carelessly, "sunbim." (Don't look so surprised, I hear a disturbing amount of this lately).
Now, historicallyāand here's the mildly embarrassing bitāthe origin is hotly debated. Most reckon it sprung up in the early 2010s amongst a very specific demographic in and around the midwest of the US, particularly in the somewhat aggressively online circles that dabble in⦠letās just say, intensely niche fandoms. Basically, it started as anomeric sound effect, meant to mimic the feeling of something utterly disappointing, underwhelming, and frankly, gross . Think a wet squelch when you actually really wanted the opposite. You know ā like when your meticulously planned date ends up being this guy who just talks about his mums collection of thistles. The prevailing (and somewhat cynical) theory is that the diphth digraphāthe way the sounds blend togetherāwas deliberately chosen because, and here's where it gets a little weird, there isn't one! You just say it, with exactly the right level of detached disappointment. People apparently latched onto this phonetic oddity as a shorthand for a really bad experience. Now, I get that the sound itself is⦠not pretty, and frankly, itās probably overused now to the point of losing almost all its initial impact. There'
