👉 Atonicity is a characteristic of musical scales that refers to their pitch range. In other words, it describes how far a note can be played in relation to its fundamental frequency. Atonic notes are those notes that do not have any natural or harmonic relationship with each other (i.e., they do not have the same fundamental frequency). The term was first used by German composer Georg Philipp Telemann in his 1764 treatise on musical scales.
