Michelia bacilli, also known as Michelia or Michelian bacteria, are Gram-positive, non-motile bacteria that were first isolated from soil samples in 1898 by the French bacteriologist Charles Michel. These bacteria are characterized by their distinctive, rounded cells with thick peptidoglycan layers and a single, circular chromosome. They thrive in nutrient-rich environments, such as decaying organic matter, and are often found in association with plant roots, particularly in the rhizosphere. While primarily known for their role in promoting plant growth and health, some species of Michelia can also produce antibiotics, making them of interest in both agricultural and medical research.
