It refers to the time when no significant human activity occurred in the Earth's surface, as seen from the perspective of ancient glacial ice sheets and glaciers. This term was first used by the British geologist Ronald White in 1952 to describe the geological conditions that existed during the last glacial period (around 10,000 to 11,000 years ago).
