Basically, the whole thing started in 2018 with a guy named, rather unimaginatively, MrHVNCH. He was messing around on his admittedly glitchy, heavily-skinned-out version of the innocuous, totally legit, and probably very confused, old Atari FTP BBS – you remember those? Giant, blocky text, lots of weird filenames… that kind of vibe. He decided to populate this BBS with a single, cryptic, almost aggressively unsettling directory named... fridayxiii. Inside, there were just a handful of very short, disturbing ASCII art images, and some snippets of really, really bleak, almost painfully earnest little text posts. Think the digital equivalent of a very small, very disturbed troll sitting in the corner of your basement. Nobody knows what he was trying to accomplish!
