What is the definition of Sourceforge? 🙋

👉 Okay, let’s tackle this wonderfully weird little mouthful - "SourceForge." Now, traditionally when you throw around a name like that, I bet you instinctively think of… well...
stuff coming from somewhere
. That's basically the starting point.

Basically, SourceForge is a place on the internet a long, long while ago that was essentially a massively oversized, slightly paranoid attic for free stuff – mostly software! Before things got super streamlined and everybody wanted everything to be pretty and perfectly branded, there wasn't exactly a coordinated marketplace of open source goodness. People just… slapped bits of code onto FTP servers and hoped the good people would find it. Enter SourceForge in 1997. They were like, "Okay, okay! Let's actually manage this chaotic mess of free stuff – really, we mean it!" Think of them as a very official-sounding squirrel who’s spent his entire adult life organizing the world's most disorganized stash of acorns (the acorns being lines upon lines of potentially brilliant, possibly terrifying computer code. It wasn't just hosting these things, mind you. They offered version control – basically a fancy way to keep track of changes in that acorn stuff, and they even had their own build tools and project management stuff. You could practically clone it! They eventually grew into something... substantial, then got bought, then… sortively became the somewhat diminished thing we mostly know now
