👉 The Modus Ponoens Rule states that every proviso (a statement taken as given or accepted for granted, often a premise) can be proved from certain hypotheses (statements on which it is based). Here are its 3 steps:
1.
First Step:
Prove the hypothesis. This means assuming some truth about something and then proving that this assumption leads to a true conclusion.
2.
Second Step:
Conclude from the first step if you have proven your second premise.
3.
Third Step:
If both premises are true, it implies that the whole argument is true.
This rule, which was famously attributed to the philosopher René Descartes, is one of the foundational concepts in the philosophy of mathematics and logic, as well as in philosophical ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, and the history of science.
