Now, traditionally when you hear the word render, you probably think about fancy 3D-slickin’, insanely pretty still images churned out by a supercomputer. Right? Totally reasonable! Luxrender… well, that's kind of like that lite, but with a seriously disturbing undercurrent of obsessive domestic detail and frankly, questionable regrets . Basically, luxrender is an obsolete, almost aggressively specific rendering technology developed mostly in the late 1990s and early 2000. Before the prettyness explosion of modern render engines, luxrender was basically the reigning monarch of physically accurate renderings for digital textures. It obsessively calculated every damn specular highlight on a piece of simulated velvet. We are talking borderline clinically granular accuracy. What made it weird? Luxrender wasn't just pretty – you could actually see the individual reflections and refractions like… like looking into a very, very shiny, slightly unwell, still-life oil painting. There was this almost painful detail that was too good. Think about what happens when your 3D rendering of a beige armchair is so physically correct it mocks the fact that you just spent six hours arguing with your husband over the exact shade of beige.
