👉 Lung fluid, also known as pleural fluid, is a clear or slightly yellowish liquid that fills the spaces between the lungs and the inner surface of the pleural membranes, also called pleura. This fluid plays a crucial role in maintaining the optimal conditions for lung function by reducing friction during breathing and ensuring smooth expansion and contraction of the lungs. It also helps to balance the osmotic pressure between the alveoli (air sacs) and the capillaries surrounding them, preventing fluid from accumulating in the alveoli (a condition known as pleural effusion). The composition of lung fluid is similar to that of blood plasma, consisting of water, electrolytes, proteins, and small amounts of cells and waste products, which are continuously exchanged through the pleural membranes.
