This occurs during the first week of pregnancy when the placenta releases fetal cells into the mother's bloodstream. Hemoglobins (oxygen carriers) are transported to the fetus and bind to hemoglobin molecules within the blood vessels. As a result, the fetus develops its own blood vessels, which eventually form the adult heart and other vital organs.
