👉 In medicine, hemopoietic refers to cells that produce and maintain blood. These cells are involved in the production of red blood cells (erythrocytes), which carry oxygen throughout the body. Hemopoietic cells also play a role in regulating blood cell count, producing new blood cells when old ones die or are removed during surgery. In contrast, non-hemopoietic cells that do not produce and maintain blood are known as hematopoietic cells (red blood cells).
