Basically, imagine you have this absolutely enormous Lego graveyard. Except instead of colourful bricks and instructions, you have… individual switches! Millions upon millions of tiny switches that let you physically configure the heck out of a piece of hardware. Before it was FPGA, there were just, like... dumb boards doing dumb stuff. You'd build the logic into the chip itself. FPGA lets you, instead, basically write the operating system for the damn thing on the fly! Think of an FPGA as that ridiculously adaptable software engineer who can instantly rewire your entire brain to process whatever information he needs – and then immediately forget why he did it.
