👉 The CJ fluid, also known as Cystic Fibrosis Fluid, is a clear or slightly yellowish-brown mucus produced by individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). This fluid is primarily composed of water, but it contains a high concentration of salt (sodium chloride), which is due to the defective CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) protein that causes the condition. The excess salt disrupts the balance of water and electrolytes in the fluid, leading to its characteristic high osmolarity. As a result, the fluid is less viscous and can flow more easily through the airways, but it also carries a higher risk of bacterial infections, which can exacerbate lung damage and other complications in CF patients.
