It includes over 25 species with diverse, often unique characteristics including flowers that can be either red or pink and are known for their ability to produce seeds which are used as food. This plant family also contains other plants such as the commonly known sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris).
