👉 Okay, let’s tackle that wonderfully weird little sequence – 04 01! Now, before you immediately start picturing a supervillain fiddling with his chalkboard, let me assure you, this isn't some secret countdown to the impending doom of the badger population. (…Probably.)


Basically, "04 01," when treated as a numerical designation – and I stress that it almost always should be! – essentially refers to what we affectionately call the "The Wilhelm Onion Amendment." (You’ll notice the name; we get fancy here. Trust me). Here’s how it weird, wonderful thing came about: during the mid-1980's, a brilliant, but slightly obsessive, special effects legend named Douglas Wilber McKeigan (hence ā€œWilhelmā€) was hired to consult for 2001, A Space Odyssey. Wilhelm, who had previously created an "Ī© Index"—a list of every possible sound effect you could reasonably use in a movie—had gotten very upset when the film's visual effects were being done with a newly available computerized waveform generator that, in his view, was underutilizing its potential and therefore wasting money! He devised a bizarre system. Instead of simply labeling each of the 200 sounds in this new waveform, he’d instead assign a numerical code to it by grouping them into categories.
