Definition: In the New Testament, "presbytery" refers to a local or ecclesiastical assembly (a meeting of the church's elders), in which representatives are chosen from all the churches in order to govern the community. A presbytery typically consists of 12-18 elders who meet together to discuss and decide on matters involving the congregation. The purpose of a presbytery is usually to oversee, or manage, the religious affairs of the church. It is usually headed by a bishop or vicar of Christ as the pastor.
