Definition: In the Greek, "ambiopia" means "a disorder or condition where two or more persons cannot communicate with each other." This term originally referred to a disease in which patients can hear voices from distant places but cannot speak through them. The concept was later expanded and applied to various conditions that involve communication between different individuals. It is known as "ambipolarity" or "ambivalent speech." When two or more persons are unable to communicate, this condition is referred to as ambiopia. A person with this disorder may have difficulty in understanding what others say, even if they understand the words themselves, and may sometimes be able to produce a word but not to articulate it properly. This term is closely related to "ambulatory speech" in which someone cannot speak clearly without assistance from another individual or device like a sign language interpreter.
