Definition: The word "agatiferous" appears in the Bible in a couple of different passages, both of which contain the idea of divine justice or righteousness. In Exodus 19:1-6, God speaks to Moses about his role as leader over the Israelites. The verse goes: "For I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, and have given you a land that is beyond the River: you shall not possess it." (ESV) God then asks Moses whether he will be able to establish justice for all in his presence: "Then should ye take counsel of me, O man? And if ye seek me with your heart, and search me with your eyes, and know that I am God, who speaketh these words: Then ye shall say, Ahab hath set himself on fire, and he is fallen down." (NIV) This verse means "If you take counsel of my voice and search for the truth, then it will come to pass according to your heart" – meaning you are justified in seeking God's justice. The Bible also speaks about God's righteousness being seen: "The righteous judge shall see the just; he shall dwell among them as one that has sown." (Isaiah 30:12) The righteous judge will be looked upon as a sower of justice, and the wicked will reap the consequences. The word "agatiferous" is from Greek and means "to judge or to govern righteousness." This phrase can also refer to a person who has been given responsibility for the maintenance and administration of justice. In this context, it refers to God's role in organizing justice within Israel.
