In the Bible, it's used metaphorically to describe those who do not follow God's will. In the Old Testament (Hebrews 13:4-5), the psalmist compares this state to a person who has died because of their sin and is unable to recover from it: "Behold, we are in an afterharm, behold, we are in a state where there's no hope, where our souls are torn to shreds." In the New Testament (1 John 5:14-16), Jesus says about this state that he has already suffered the loss of his own life: "Surely, I am not ashamed, for I know what love is, for I am come from God, and ye cannot bear with me." This verse also hints at the concept of afterharm being a condition in which we are unable to experience the benefits of following God's will without suffering harm.
