Definition: Adjournment is a legal action in which a court or other administrative body allows an accused to leave the premises in which he is being tried (see Section 324 of the Criminal Procedure Code). An adjourned case may be used as evidence that a trial has been put on hold because the prosecutor has changed his mind. In some countries, adjournments can also be used as a way for the court to give the accused an opportunity to prepare his case and to make any necessary changes to it before the next hearing.
