Definition: Adenoid (ad-də-nē-ee) : The primary structure of an alveolar duct that develops in the first few days after birth. It provides a site for the development of the airway, including the lumen of the bronchus and the airway branches. Adenoic acid is secreted from adenoids during infancy and childhood. Adenoid cystic fibrosis (also known as Cystic Fibrosis) : A genetic disorder in which an abnormal accumulation of a protein, called alveolar deoxypsine (adenosine triphosphate) can form a thickened cyst-like mass, called a 'adenoic' or adenoid cyst. The resulting adenoids are often absent by adulthood. Adenoids are one type of airway duct in the lungs.
