Definition: Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that acts as an acetyl group in the acetylcholine receptor (ACHR) to act on its receptors. The term "achetylcholinic" refers to the acetyl groups which are located within the ACHR. There are two types of acetylcholinergic neurons, called acetylcholinergic type 1 and acetylcholinergic type 2. They both respond to acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter but they respond to different acetylcholinergic receptors. The acetyl group attached to the receptor is termed acetylcholine.
