Definition: Accession, also known as a translocation, is an abnormal crossing of chromosomes during fertilization that leads to an extra chromosome or set of chromosomes from one egg to another. In this situation, the chromosomal number on the extra chromosome is different than the normal numbers and it can be used in research for studying the origins of the extra chromosome. Accession happens when two cells are fertilized by a sperm, where each cell has its own unique genetic material from a mother's endometrium (gynecological tissue). The extra chromosomes that result from this crossover happen to have their normal numbers and are not present on one another. The extra chromosomes can be used for studies in genetics, which can help understand the origins of genetic variations. Accession is often used in research where it allows scientists to study how chromosomes are transferred between cells during fertilization. It is also used in genetic counseling to identify families with a higher chance of having an affected child due to an extra chromosome.
