Definition: Acridia refers to a type of material that can absorb, as a result of its high absorption capacity, a large amount of light without the light being absorbed in response to this absorbance. In other words, the absorbance is greater than expected for its absorptivity and, when measured under typical conditions, it absorbs significantly more than the absorbent would be expected to absorb. Acridia has been used by chemists since ancient times to indicate the level of a chemical compound in which light absorption was greatest. The word acridia can be used to describe any substance that is considered highly absorptive or absorbing.
