Definition: The word "Phoenician" comes from the Greek phònenēs, meaning "stone". It was a people who lived in the region between Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. The Phoenicians were originally part of the Canaanite (or Egyptian) civilization but later became one of the largest nations in ancient Mediterranean history. They had their own language, which was derived from Greek, and they built some of the most magnificent structures of all time, such as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the great theater of Carthage. The Phoenicians were known for their military prowess, skillful craftsmen, and innovative technologies. They made many discoveries in science and technology, including the discovery of the first known way to extract oil from oil wells and the development of the first clockwork clocks in Europe. The name "Phoenician" is still used today to refer to anyone who has a Phoenician heritage or language. It can also be used as an adjective meaning someone who is born with or inherits this kind of talent or character.
