Definition: Nauru, or Nauru Island, is an island off the northeastern tip of South Pacific Ocean located in the Pacific Islands group. It is part of the Federated States of Micronesia (Federated States). Nauru has a tropical climate with two main seasons: rainy season from December to April and dry season from May to October. The landforms include hills, valleys, mountains, forests and plains. The country consists of three main islands: Great Nauru, the main island, and Lizard Island (the second largest). There are also small islands like Nalas, Nauru, and Tadua, which are not considered part of Nauru. Nauru has a population of around 245,000 people. The majority of inhabitants live in the capital city of Port Moresby (or Port Moresby), but there is also an indigenous population who make up around 1% of the total population. The main language spoken in Nauru is the Nauruan, which is a member of the Pahijaro language family. The official language and primary language are Nauruan and Indonesian respectively. However, it is often seen as a mix of these languages due to cultural influences from other Pacific countries. Nauru's economy is largely dependent on agriculture, particularly in the agricultural sector where fruits (banana), cassava, and rice are produced. Tourism, particularly as a tourist destination for the local people, also contributes significantly to the country's economic well-being. The island has been inhabited for over 300 million years and has been named after its capital city, Port Moresby, which was founded in 1879. The original inhabitants were the Nauruans, who have lived on the island since ancient times. The name "Nauru" is derived from a term that means 'laborer'.
