Definition: Macedonia is a country located in Europe, bordered by Georgia, Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania to the west, Romania to the east, Moldova to the north, Ukraine to the south, and Belarus to the northwest. The capital of the Republic of Macedonia is Skopje. The name "Macedonia" comes from the ancient Greek word for mountainous region, where the term "Macedonias", meaning "mountainous regions," refers to the land along the Black Sea coast. The country was established in 1946 as a result of the partition of Bulgaria by the Soviet Union. The most important landmarks and historical sites in Macedonia include the Ancient Greek city of Oia, known for its unique architectural style, the ruins of ancient Macedonian temples such as Kastrioti, the famous cave that contains an inscription from Alexander the Great, the Roman amphitheater at Koprivsko, and the ancient town of Vlora. The country is also home to the World War II battlefields near Skopje, including the Battle of Pliska.
