Definition: Lladro is a Spanish term which translates to "fountain" in English. It is a decorative clay sculpture or figurative drawing typically made from stone or marble with figures and scenes of life (and sometimes death) by water. The figures are often dressed in cloaks, hats, or masks and are said to represent the virtues of virtue, passion, beauty, and wisdom, as well as to carry messages about love and hope. It is one of the oldest surviving forms of art in Spain. In Spanish folklore, Lladro is associated with the spirit of Don Juan, a mythical figure who lived in the Basque country from the 13th century until his death. According to legend, Don Juan was killed by a water monster that represented the devil or hell. In tribute to him, Lladro was created to represent heaven and to protect it from harm.
