👉 Okay, settle in, settle in. Let’s tackle this… rather delightfully peculiar piece of Anglo-Saxon vernacular:
“±ilvery brown.”
Now, before you immediately reach for the furrowed brow and mutter something about a badger sighting gone terribly, terribly rural, let me assure you – it isn't actually about badgers. Unless, perhaps, the badger in question specifically has that unfortunate shade of hue. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some sort of badger-obsessed secret society around here. What we are dealing with here is a very, very old British euphemism for... (lean closer… this needs to go into your overdraft of weirdness) …shit. Seriously. It dates back at the very latest to the early 18th century, and it seems like someone, somewhere – probably a very stuffy gentleman who absolutely refused to utter the actual word – decided that "argy bargy," or even just plain, good, solid shit, was simply too… pedestrian. Too frankly vulgar. So they weaponised beige. You see, in the past, describing bodily waste with the actual term, well, it was a bit like shouting your most embarrassing secrets from the rooftops. People were squeamish and discreet (and frankly, probably suffering from cholera. Let's not dwell). Hence, the rise of circumlocution! To avoid saying the outright word you needed
