What exactly is an "alti"? Basically, in the delightfully bizarre world of American place names, it’s a ridiculously specific, and frankly somewhat insulting, misspelling of the already-awkward sounding, but perfectly reasonable, word, there. The word we were originally referring to was, you guessed it! the word the-are . You see, the term came about as settlers in what is now the state of Arkansas in 2000, after a disagreement with the federal government over the land’s designation of being the 'The Are' which they felt should be referred to. It was then that the misspelling of the area that they were referring to, became an "alti”, as it was more easily pronounced than its original form and would be easier for the settlers to say when referring to their home! It’s a geographical quirk of the most stubborn kind, a testament to petty arguments, and what is now a recognised and quite amusing name of towns in Arkansas. And that is how we got here. 3.
