A rain gauge, also called a rain meter, measures the amount of rainfall over a period of time. It helps gardeners, farmers, and weather enthusiasts track precipitation and understand weather patterns.

Steps to Read a Standard Rain Gauge

Place the gauge correctly: Set the gauge in an open area away from trees, buildings, or anything that could block rain.
Wait for rain to collect: Allow the gauge to collect water during or after a rainfall event.
Check the water level: Look at the markings on the tube where the water level stops.
Read the measurement: Measurements are usually in inches or millimeters. Note the number corresponding to the water level.
Empty the gauge: After recording, pour out the water to prepare for the next measurement.
